College Football Playoffs

Another College Football Playoff, another chance for Alabama to win the National Championship.

After this year’s selection committee decided to give the 4th seed to Alabama instead of Florida State, you have to seriously wonder if College Football is run by the SEC in general and Alabama in particular. There is absolutely no reason (other than money) that Florida State should have been left out of the Championship tournament. They went undefeated, beat number 16 Louisville for the ACC championship and were rated highly for strength of schedule. Alabama , meanwhile lost to Texas. Yes, they beat Georgia but they still had the one loss. This is all about the money because Alabama has the “bigger” name and are expected to draw a better TV audience than Florida State would have been.

The selection committee however, decided in their own mind that Alabama is the better team but in this case they weren’t better than Florida State. At this point, what is the purpose of the regular season if after you accomplish everything you are supposed to accomplish, you still don’t get a chance to play for the national championship. I will own up to the fact that my interest in college football is pretty low and I only pay attention to the final weeks of the season, but this decision has really soured me on college football and I don’t believe I am the only one that feels this way.

NFL 2022

The 2022 NFL season is just around the corner and I for one can’t wait for it to start. Not because I run a football pool, but because there seems to be more excitement in football than there is in baseball.

NFL Schedule - 2022

The long awaited day has arrived. The NFL schedule for the 2022 season will be released later today and everyone (almost everyone) is anxiously awaiting to see which team will have the easiest or hardest schedule. Which games will provide the most excitement, etc. It wasn’t that long ago when the schedule was announced and the public would not see it until they read the sports page the next day. The release of the NFL schedule did not generate that much interested…think about it. The games won’t be played for another 4 months and by that time, will anyone care?

The football season is now 12 months long, so I imagine that any news is important in that it keeps the NFL in the minds of football fans. Look at the spectacle that Draft Day has become. Televised coverage for 3 days with all the fanfare that they can muster. I can understand the interest in who is selected number one or which quarterback is selected first. But three days? The only people interested in those two other days are the parents and friends of the players that have not yet been selected.

You have to give the NFL credit however…they keep coming up with these “big” days in the 12 month long campaign to keep their brand in the forefront of every football fan in the country. All we can do at this point is wait for the schedule release and then wait for the season to start.
